Overview

Mason Clark Associates (MCA) continues to enjoy a long standing professional relationship with North Lincolnshire Council (NLC) and as such were commissioned to undertake the design and professional services for the landscaping works at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre & the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Gardens, to create an inviting outdoor space bringing a new dimension to the regular exhibitions which are held there throughout the year.

The newly christened Queen Elizabeth Memorial Gardens was built following a £1m investment from the Government as part of the Towns Fund.

Challenges and Solutions

Civil Engineering: MCA’s civil engineering team worked closely with the project architect to provide the drainage design and details for the underground drainage and the pavement construction for the newly extended plaza. One of the complex aspects of this scheme included identifying existing drainage which could be adapted and capable of receiving new connections.

Landscaping & Historical Building: It was important to our Client that the landscaping of the newly developed areas blended seamlessly with the previously landscaped areas of the square, whilst at the same time ensuring the new landscaping reflects the significance of the Grade II* Listed former Church of St John and the stunning restoration works that have recently been completed. This was achieved by close liaison with the client and the architect regarding matters like the careful selection of the best materials for use and establishing the most suitable new paving levels.

MCA's Contribution

Following the successful management of the conservation and repair works to the neighbouring former Church of St John. MCA were engaged as project manager to undertake these additional improvements to the town centre. This involved coordinating an expert multi-disciplinary team that included architecture, quantity surveying, civil engineering & structural engineering and CDM Principal Designer services ensuring all aspects of the project were managed efficiently and within budget.

  • NEC project management and contract administration: MCA managed the contract under the NEC4 framework, coordinating with contractors and ensuring that the project remained on track.
  • Client support: MCA acted as a vital link between North Lincolnshire Council and the project team of consultants and the contractor, facilitating smooth communication and project progression.
  • NEC Supervisor: MCA provided NEC Supervisor services, ensuring that all works were carried out in line with the required standards and specifications, and notifying defects to the contractor when they arose.
  • CDM Principal Designer: MCA provided advice and assistance to their Client on their duties and helped the project team to design out risks and prepare the pre-construction information.

Results

Our innovative and collaborative approach ensures that this high profile transformation is a key part of Scunthorpe’s town centre.

The works have been sensitively undertaken to capture and blend the importance of the town’s history with this new modern space, which is of benefit to its many users, whether visiting the Queen Elizabeth Gardens, or enjoying a trip to the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre.
