Overview
Bridlington Town Hall was awarded Grade II listed status in 1989, recognising its historical and architectural significance.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) funded a major refurbishment to modernise the facility while ensuring all alterations were sympathetic to the building’s heritage.
The project aimed to enhance functionality while preserving the historical character of the structure.
Challenges and Solutions
Some of the challenges we faced were:
We had to limit steel deflections to safeguard against cracking to first floor walls. Close liaison with a specialist regarding main hall floor repairs was required.
Bridlington Town Hall is a live facility, the first floor was in constant use during the refurbishment, which meant that the wellbeing and safety of staff working had to be considered during the works.
MCA's Contribution
Structural engineering services, including:
Temporary works coordination, ensuring that all structural supports and load management solutions were effectively implemented.
Close liaison with conservation specialists to maintain architectural integrity.
Results
The refurbishment successfully modernised the Town Hall while preserving its historical character.
Following the completion of works, the Bridlington Echo wrote
“The alterations have created more open plan areas and so created a better experience for both staff and the public. The Customer Service Centre has been transformed and remodelled to provide a centre that is modern and up to date”.
The Customer Service Centre now provides a more functional and welcoming space, improving public access and operational efficiency.
The historic elements of the structure were safeguarded, ensuring the building remains a key civic asset for years to come.
