Dining Hall Vaults Bolton Abbey

The Chatsworth Estate commissioned Mason Clark Associates to investigate, assess and design repairs to stabilise masonry arches within this impressive Grade II* Listed building. The Hall vaults have undergone historic movement causing local stresses and splitting of the stone ribs. We specified discrete grouted anchors and pinning of the masonry to provide additional support and robustness against any further movement.

The works were completed in a tight timescale and within the confined floor void spaces, working between historic timbers to provide steel channel anchor plates for the Cintec rods. Drilling was carefully coordinated with the exposed stone ribs to minimise the visual intrusion, with blended mortar plugs to conceal the ends of the anchors.

Great care was taken to protect a number of the valuable paintings in the room, which could not be moved due to their size.
