Overview
As part of a wider initiative to improve safety and operational efficiency across its facilities, Northern Trains Limited commissioned the design and implementation of an automated Depot Personnel Protection System (DPPS) at one of its key maintenance depots.
The project aimed to enhance protection for staff working in and around train maintenance areas by introducing a system that controls train movements, alerts personnel to potential hazards, and ensures safe working conditions through integrated technology and infrastructure upgrades.
MCA were commissioned by RTS Infrastructure Services (RTS) on behalf of Northern Trains Limited to provide design services.
Challenges and Solutions
The refurbishment of the Hull Botanic Gardens Traction Maintenance Depot brought with it a significant increase in train movements and operational complexity. This raised the risk of accidents involving staff working on or near the tracks. The challenge was to implement a system that could manage these risks without disrupting day-to-day operations.
To address this, a fully automated Depot Personnel Protection System (DPPS) was developed. The system included:
MCA's Contribution
We provided the structural engineering design services for the project. Our team designed the foundations for derailers, sensor posts, and associated infrastructure, tailoring the solutions to suit the site’s ground conditions and spatial constraints. We also carried out ground investigations and developed risk assessments to inform safe and practical construction methods.
We worked closely with RTS to accommodate the power distribution routes, ensuring safe and reliable connections to the new equipment. This included compliance with all relevant Network Rail standards.
Beyond design, we supported the project through stakeholder coordination, technical documentation, and the preparation of detailed operation and maintenance manuals. Our collaborative and proactive approach helped ensure the system was delivered safely and efficiently.
Results
The implementation of the automated Depot Personnel Protection System has significantly improved safety and operational control at the depot.
Staff now benefit from a reliable system that prevents unauthorised train movements, with clear visual and audible alerts ensuring everyone is aware of activity on the tracks.
The centralised control system allows depot managers to monitor staff presence and train movements in real time, enhancing both safety and efficiency.
By integrating the new system with existing infrastructure, the project was fully compliant and delivered with minimal disruption.
