Mason Clark Associates were appointed by Koso Kent Introl to design and prepare reinforcement details for an automated lathe base, to be installed in their Brighouse factory.
The lathe weighs approximately 60T and can handle multiple workpieces up to 10T. The lathe is fed by a pallet handling system and the tools changed using a robotised arm. The base is 13.5m x 9.8m on plan and up to 1.5m deep, and incorporates multiple variations in level to accommodate the lathe and its associated oil-ways.
The complex shape was modelled in 3D so the different changes in level were accurately picked up in the many cross sections which were needed to show the reinforcement layout. Following the concrete works, specialist fixing installers set the machine anchor bolts to an accuracy of 0.5mm.
The base was designed to Structural Eurocodes using BS EN 1992 for the concrete works and BS EN 1997 for the geotechnical aspects.
