ERYC Hornsea Boat Compound

Mason Clark Associates (MCA) was awarded the Civils and Drainage Engineering Services contract after a successful tendering process through YORconsult to undertake the works at the Hornsea Boat Compound for East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC)

The Hornsea Boat compound is a complex Civil Engineering scheme to construct a ‘harbour’ for mainly fishing vessels after they have been pulled out of the sea and tracked over the beach. The existing facility did not comply with current legislation. The new design had to be developed to overcome the following challenges

- The existing site was heavily contaminated with buried waste materials

- Yorkshire Water have a nearby large pumping facilities to deal with foul discharge and large cast iron pipes pass under the site.

- The site is in Flood Zone 3A

- Being near the sea and an open water course the site is in a very sensitive ecological area.

In order to achieve a balance of excavation and fill coupled with the concerns about excavating contaminated land a very complex ground model had to be set up. This also had to model the volumes of water storage available to allow the existing water course to be controlled and not flood adjacent properties. Many options and alternative models were set up and investigated to try and arrive at the best solution. This was a pioneering design scheme and many hours were spent analysing numerous scenarios to deliver a state of the art modelled design.

As the Lead Designer for all the infrastructure works we worked closely with ERYC NEC Project Manager in a challenging project. Our main services covered highway works, pedestrianisation, park and ride scheme design, traffic safety, highways environmental improvements, hard landscaping, bridge works, flood prevention, sewerage and drainage design. We also arranged and provided all the required studies and surveys associated with these services to obtain planning approval for the scheme.
