East Yorkshire Flood Alleviation Schemes
14th February 2012
Mason Clark are providing design services for East Riding of Yorkshire Council and Hull City Council for the Willerby and Derringham Flood Alleviation Scheme (WaDFAS) and the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme (COPFAS).
These two schemes that have come into being following the flooding in 2007 have recently been awarded feasibility funding from the Environment Agency.
Works carried out by Mason Clark on the project include the acquisition of topographic survey data and using an integrated catchment model of the area. We have been able to identify flood flow paths so that we are able to appropriately place storage lagoons, earth bunds and new watercourses.
These projects involve the creation of one of the most complex integrated urban catchment models undertaken in recent times, which will help us plan to reduce the risk of flooding in the future.
Approved Supplier to the NHS
10th February 2012
Mason Clark Associates are now on the Approved List of Consultants to the NHS for Civil, Structural and CDMC for Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust.
One of the projects where we were asked to provide our services was the Ambulance drop off bays at Hull Royal Infirmary Eye Hospital. The Humberside and East Yorkshire (HEY) Trust were faced with impracticalities for ensuring a safe place for their patients to be dropped off close to the clinic due to the traffic and on street parking in the vicinity.
The preferred option was to provide a layby off the carriageway and divert the footpath around the layby. This option was agreed and approved by Hull City Council Highways. Consultation with statutory undertakers found that services were present and diversionary works would be required which were not in keeping with the scope of works. As such, an alternative approach has been designed so that the layby is constructed within the carriageway (locally around 4.8m), protected by build outs and leaving the footpath as existing.
Hull & Humber RICS Association
10th February 2012
Mason Clark’s Associate Building Surveyor, Douglas Jaram, is one of 4 steering group members who are promoting a new Hull and Humber Local RICS association. We have teamed up with local members Simon Delaney, Kevin Marling and Peter Melling to launch the concept of the association. The group are holding an event at Hull Marina Holiday Inn on 17th February from 12:00pm.
The idea behind the event is firstly to float the idea of the local association amongst the local RICS membership and secondly to encourage networking. The RICS have held similar successful events within the region at Leeds and Sheffield and this is a first for Hull. The first 50 tickets were a complete sell out so 20 more have been released! Doug said “The sell out success of the event is due to the energy and enthusiasm of the local membership but also a keen willingness to hold CPD events locally”. Other professional groups are also involved such as CIOB and ICE but it is hoped others will join in as the process gathers momentum.
The last few places are still available on the following link. Mason Clark will be in attendance so hopefully see you there.

Marathon Man
6th February 2012
Ian Cook, Director, Mason Clark Associates, will be joining thousands of other runners at the London Marathon on 22 April this year.
Since hanging up his football boots a couple of years ago, Ian has been looking for another challenge. Now we can think of easier things than running 26 miles in wind/rain/heat, but whatever the weather we know Ian will be there.
Ian has been training hard and we hope he finishes in a good time ... or just finishes which we are sure Ian would be happy with!
Ian is running for a very worthwhile charity, Cancer Research UK, and hoping to raise £2,000 so please dig deep and sponsor Ian for this very worthwhile cause.

Good Luck Ian!
